The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has unveiled its five-year recruitment plan, aiming to hire an additional 111,870 teachers by 2027 to tackle the shortage of educators in public schools. This initiative, outlined in the 2023-2027 Strategic Plan, builds upon previous efforts initiated during President William Ruto’s administration in the 2022/23 Financial Year.TSC recruitment of teachers PNP.
Dr. Nancy Macharia, head of TSC, highlighted the support received from the Kenya Kwanza Administration in the last financial year (2022/23), which allowed for the recruitment of 30,000 new teachers to address existing gaps in schools. Additionally, the commission recruited an additional 20,000 intern teachers in the 2023/24 Financial Year, supported by an allocation of Sh4.7 billion.
The upcoming budget allocation for 2024/2025, pending parliamentary approval, includes provisions for confirming senior interns and potentially recruiting another 20,000 intern teachers starting August 2024.
Despite an acknowledged teacher-student ratio of 1:40, which is stretched in urban areas and informal settlements, the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recommends a ratio of 25 students per teacher for primary schools nationwide.
TSC is committed to meeting its recruitment targets by the end of 2027 to address teacher shortages and improve ratio challenges in schools, ensuring that learners receive quality education crucial for shaping the future of the country.TSC recruitment of teachers PNP.
