No Paying Extra Fee For Newly Placed University Students -Cs Machogu
Parents of students who took the KCSE exam last year won’t face increased fees for their children’s university and college education, as institutions are directed to maintain last year’s fees and course costs. The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has initiated applications for the 899,453 qualifying students for degree and diploma courses from the 2023 KCSE.
University authorities are warned of consequences if they raise fees, with instructions for the Universities Fund and Ministry of Education officials to scrutinize course fees declarations. This year, under the new funding model, universities can set program fees but cannot alter them for enrolled students.
KUCCPS CEO Mercy Wahome announced the opening of the online application portal for various courses, including degree, diploma, certificate, craft, and artisan programs, extending eligibility to school leavers from the past 12 years. Around 201,073 students are eligible for degree programs, while the rest compete for diploma and certificate placements in TVET institutions, TTCs, and KMTC campuses.
Application will be through the student portal, with a mobilization campaign underway to encourage all Form 4 leavers from the past 13 years to apply for courses. Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu emphasized the importance of achieving 100% transition from secondary to higher education and directed collaborative efforts among state agencies for outreach and assistance in application submissions.
Following the placement process, students will be eligible to apply for government scholarships or loans through portals opened by the Universities Fund and Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
